Adding Additional Serial Ports or USB Ports To Your PC

PC's used to be shipped with 4 serial ports, then 2 serial ports and 2 USB ports, and now with no serial ports and 2 or more USB ports . . .

Serial Port Connector

USB Port Connector

Adding USB Ports involves purchasing a standard 4 or 8 port USB hub at any local computer store.  Then plug this hub into one of your computer's existing USB ports.  You can add 16 USB ports by adding two 8 port USB hubs.  If you go the USB port route, you will need one of our USB adapters for each USB port you want to place an LED sign on.  USB cables are restricted to 15 feet, but with our USB adapter, you can extend the serial side of the cable up to 1,500 feet using any standard 4-wire phone line extension cord.

Adding Serial Ports can be done externally using a product such as the Edgeport serial hubs by Inside Out Networks.  The Edgeport products come in 4/8/12/16 serial port configurations, and approximately ranges in price from $250 for 4 ports, to $600 for 16 ports.   The Edgeport units take up one USB port and can add up to 16 serial ports to your PC, without opening your PC.  If you are comfortable opening your PC, you can add a multiple serial port PCI card to your PC, providing your PC has an available PCI slot.
